REVIEW - THE SHAPE OF WATER

Unable to perceive the shape of You, I find You all around me. Your presence fills my eyes with Your love, It humbles my heart, For You are everywhere.

Suspend reality, at least for the time it takes to watch this truly magical film.

Love, compassion, acceptance, loneliness, companionship, equals, none judgemental, greed, pride, stubbornness, loathing and lust.

You will either love or hate this film and I absolutely loved it, one if not the best film!

I now have another film to add to my favourites list.

Recommended but I know you will either love or hate this film.

Black Mirror (2011– )

Stories original, scary, beautiful, brilliantly acted and a must watch
11 January 2018
REVIEW - BLACK MIRROR

Let me start with a little explanation, Black Mirror is a series made up of separate stories, so from one to another each is different.

That being said even though each episode is a different story one thing they have in common is that they are original.

Some episodes are scary, some make you think and some are just strange but each is compelling viewing.

As each episode is its own story if you don't like the subject of one skip to the next because so far there are 4 series (UK) seasons (US) to watch so I can guarantee you'll find something.

Stories original, scary, beautiful, brilliantly acted and a must watch!

REVIEW - DOWNSIZING

I will be totally honest, I didn't even like the look of this silly story of a husband and wife who get shrunk in an attempt to save the environment but.......

I enjoy films that make you question yourself, this is one such film.

The film touches on so much which I won't post as they will be spoilers, all I will say is that this film was a very pleasant surprise.

REVIEW - DARKEST HOUR

Interesting seeing how and what happened behind the closed doors of Westminster from the time Winston Churchill became Prime Minister to the very famous speech where we decided to go to war.

Gary Oldman is exceptional playing Winston Churchill.

Occasionally a film needs to be seen purely for its historical value and this is one such film.

REVIEW - THE GREATEST SHOWMAN

The Greatest Showman is a great show, that's official, enjoyable from start to finish, with lavish sets, great songs and a great story.

Recommended viewing, in fact the 2 hours flew by and not many films do that these days.

There is one small gripe which unfortunately does effect the rating, Hugh Jackman, in some places I just couldn't hear what he was singing.

Great feel good film, a must see

REVIEW - ASH VS EVIL DEAD

It's very rare these days that you find a TV series that you really enjoy, for example The X Files and The Orville but this quiet little none offensive program caught my eye and what a total mash up of comedy blood guts and gore.

30 years on from the San Rami cult classic that was Evil Dead comes this and WOW it's brilliant.

Not for the squeamish with heads being lopped off with the trusty chain saw but genuinely funny too boot.

REVIEW - BLEEDING STEEL

The guy is in his 60s, how is he still doing what he's doing?

Another outing for Jackie Chan and another action film to enjoy without too much thought but enjoyable none the less.

Interesting story but of course marvellous action and fighting which is what Jackie Chan does so well.

If your a Chan Fan then watch, nowhere near as great as The Foreigner but a good film in its own right (The Foreigner broke the mould when it came to Chan films and can't be beaten).

Expected more than what was delivered
25 December 2017
REVIEW - BRIGHT

A Netflix original film.

The anticipation and expectation sometimes is better than reality. Bright is such a film. The acting is excellent, the story is interesting and of course the stunts and special effects are great but unfortunately the film lacks one thing.

The film doesn't deserve the bad reviews it has been getting because it is a good watch but not a great watch which is the essential thing that this film lacks, you expect more from the whole experience. This I personally feel is why this film has been getting such bad reviews because with the film having such a lot going for it your left thinking was that it.

REVIEW - BEYOND SKYLINE

Way back in 2010 a film came out of nowhere showing the struggle of a group of people trying to survive an alien invasion whilst being trapped in their apartment block. The ending was a little strange with one of them fighting back after being transformed into an alien killing machine.

BEYOND SKYLINE now answers the questions posed by the original film and what a film this is too.

From start to finish gripping and one of the most enjoyable films I've seen recently.

A cross between Die Hard, Transformers, Alien and Predator this is one enjoyable film and I'd recommend you do so.

Works on every level and not many films do that these days.

TERRIBLE

REVIEW - STAR WARS - THE LAST JEDI

Finally the long awaited latest Star Wars film is out, with of course all of the sponsorship, advertising and promotion you'd come to expect.

Carrie Fisher for me was the reason why I went to see the film, but....

I'm honest and impartial so here goes.

TERRIBLE!

Acting was wooden.

Story took the franchise nowhere.

As usual stunning effects and scenery but honestly save your time and money and skip 8 completely, trust me you wont miss anything.

For me this was another War For The Planet Of The Apes.

Go see it just for Carrie Fisher as from the first scene to the last she is the only one in the whole film that shone.

6 December 2017
REVIEW – THE CIRCLE

How much do you post on Social Media?

What do you post on Social Media?

The question is how do you choose when and what you post to Social Media?

The film revolves around this whole subject, when does social media become; intrusive? Controlling? Compelling? Informative? Compulsive? Threatening? Infringing on one's privacy?

What if everything you did was automatically uploaded to the internet for the rest of the world to see?

No privacy!

Very predictable, from the start you can predict what is coming but how it's done is an interesting watch with some things in our daily life being touched on like Fitbit, driverless cars, big brother, election rigging ETC.

Worth a watch, may make people realise potentially that followers don't want to see a picture of your coffee or what you had for lunch.

One to watch if your a Star Trek fan!
6 December 2017
REVIEW - THE ORVILLE

I'm a big science fiction fan but I can't stand Family Guy.

What does the above possibly have to do with this review?

Everything.

The creator of Family Guy has created literary the best science fiction program!

Yes you have read correctly, the creator of one of the worst programs has created one of the best.

I was reluctant but because I loved Star Trek The Next Generation so much I thought I'd give this a try and pleasantly surprised I was too.

The stories are original but have a meaning in the present.

Binge watched the whole first season!

One to watch if your a Star Trek fan!

REVIEW - THE RIOT CLUB

I have watched many films in my life and many wash over me with no meaning except for a few like I Daniel Blake.

This film is one of those very rare films that is truly disturbing.

The difference between those who have and those who have not, the difference between those born into money and those who earn it.

Horrible, disturbing but essential watching reinforcing the image of we look after our own.

Are the characters in this film true? Do people actually act this way? I will never know and honestly never want to be in the position to find out.

REVIEW - JUSTICE LEAGUE

Again another film I've been waiting to see and again (for me personally) seems to be lost.

Whilst the story is clumsy at best and predictable the effects are astounding but as we have seen with many other films effects don't make a good movie.

A very long preamble bringing the characters together doesn't help us to get to know them and by the time the movie finishes you just don't care.

DC have tried to bring some humour into the mix with The Flash and the way he interacts with the other characters basically being the side kick but it just doesn't work.

Watchable, don't get me wrong but not memorable, OK for a Sunday afternoon as a family sat around the TV but save your money paying to watch it.

The most dysfunctional family in the universe
6 November 2017
REVIEW - THOR RAGNAROK

The most dysfunctional family in the universe.

I've been getting tired of all the Marvel and DC films recently and with more on the horizon to come I didn't fancy the thought of sitting through another.

THOR RAGNAROCK I must admit did surprise.

It helped that it wasn't set on Earth because the feats were far better contained in this story than all of the previous based on defending the Earth and actually this film rather than making me cringe at Tony Stark did actually make me laugh.

Interesting story to keep it moving, of course great special effects and stunts but again what tipped this into the positive was the humour.

Worth seeing, don't think just enjoy.

REVIEW - STRANGER THINGS

Originally I didn't watch the first season as it was marketed as a kids program but I'm sitting here now binge watching the first season and this children's TV program literally outshines all others.

A true masterpiece of story telling and the acting is the best I have ever seen.

Amazingly gripping on all fronts.

If there is one thing you do this Halloween then you must watch Stranger Things

REVIEW - JIGSAW

Who remembers the very first Saw film and how through the course of the many films the whole premise seemed to get lost to the investigation.

The premise that it was a game with an outcome you could choose.

In many ways this latest installment returns to the original premise but......

Generally a good (not great) film but certainly worth your time.

One or two plot holes which of course I will not give away.

My biggest problem with the film is why? As with Ghost In The Machine, why tell us the complete story in one film, why not leave us wanting more?

The above doesn't generally spoil the film which does have a lot of twists and turns.

REVIEW - BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99

There are some films that defy words, some because they are so bad and some that are just so good.

This starts very very very slowly but as the film progress your glad because the hero / villain has morals and without the slow start the film wouldn't hit you as hard as it does.

I predict this will become another classic like Pulp Fiction!

As I say simple and lazy or tight budget but which don't spoil the film
24 October 2017
REVIEW - THE WHEELMAN

A friend at work recommended this film and as I'd never heard of it I thought why not.

So I have a simple question for you, do you think the bigger the budget the better the film?

Case in point The Wheelman.

Obviously a tight budget but the in car camera shots are very original and actually add to the suspense of the interesting story being told but......

During the film there are silly lazy errors that whilst don't detract from the overall film do irritate. For example driving past the same neon lit shop front 5 times, having the hand brake light illuminated on the dash board, using the same frontage of a bar to drive past and later walk past.

As I say simple and lazy or tight budget but which don't spoil the film.

Plot moves along quickly enough with a few twists and turns to keep you interested.

A global disaster movie trying and failing to imitate many others
20 October 2017
Yesterday I reviewed a Russian film called at Attraction which in essence showed their military to be tolerant and throughout the film sought a peaceful resolution which is not the picture we get from the media. Why am I referring to a previous review?

GEOSTORM for me was from start to finish the USA controlling and wanting to be the supreme global power which I'm afraid to say is the exact image of the USA we get from the media.

The film itself just didn't make you care or feel for the characters like for example Independence Day did.

Lavish special effects, lame story and the first hour just building up to...........

A global disaster movie trying and failing to imitate many others.

Don't get me wrong, enjoyable, watchable if nothing else is on (The Core).

REVIEW - ATTRACTION

I saw clips of this Russian film on YouTube so decided to give it a go.

Well I must say what a surprise! A science fiction love story with real human stories.

What would you do if you thought the military were protecting a crashed alien spaceship?

What would you do if you controlled the military?

What would you do if you found an injured alien?

Great film, great story and special effects to rival Hollywood!

Hopefully this will be dubbed into English because its a very enjoyable watch.

REVIEW - THE FOREIGNER

There are very few films that impress me much these days, either the story is rubbish, the acting terrible or the effects just dull, but and this is a HUGE BUT, this film is THE BEST JACKIE CHAN FILM!

From start to finish excellent, can't say anything more.

One film you must see.

Previous films were humorous with amazing stunts this is real in your face.

A new Chapter of Chan!

REVIEW - GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN

Honestly didn't know what to expect when I went to see this film. As its based (loosely) around the creation of the Winnie The Poo stories I thought it was going to be a children's film but.......

The film itself is actually and surprising very good, touching on the family dynamic of the upper classes during the 1930s to 1940s.

Very stand offish parents who seem to care about their social standing rather than their son (Christopher Robin) and how this impacts on all of their lives.

Looking at how one person can force the hand of another, in this case forcing father and son to actually spend time together and bond.

Lessons can be learnt from this film, no matter how much you work, your children want you.

Thoroughly enjoyable film on many levels.

REVIEW - BLADE RUNNER 2049

Finally the long awaited sequel finally arrived to rave reviews from all of the news papers.

But..........

Hinedtky, what a complete and utter waste of my time. I thought War For The Planet of the Ales was bad but this, I'd really rather watch paint dry.

2 hours and 42 minutes of a story which was written on the back of a postage stamp.

I usually try to make these reviews interesting but I can't think of anything interesting to say about this film. Actually I can and I will.

Hollywood we are not stupid, it doesn't matter what the original film was or turned out to be, please don't patronise us by making films like this obviously just for the money.

REVIEW - GERALDS GAME

Forget IT!

Don't waste your time and money going to see school kids battle a supernatural shape shifting clown but instead go and see this master piece from the same author, Steven King.

Who are the monsters in your life? Are they real? Can you ever face your own demons?

Film starts off as what you think is a predictable story but wow, oh wow!

Disturbing, compelling, interesting and deep.

A must see in my opinion, definitely better than IT!
